A Burger Battle for the Pizza Populace
"Just about every pizza place has a Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza. There aren't many places where it's one of your most popular pizzas.
When we had our first ever March Madness style pizza tournament based on voting on Facebook in 2019, the Bacon Cheeseburger pizza made it all the way to the Final Four, losing in the Championship matchup against the Meatza. This pizza stands out at a place where Specialty pizzas are our specialty when it comes to head to head competition against most of the others.
Why is our Bacon Cheeseburger pizza so good? Because we make it taste just like a Bacon Cheeseburger. Our sauce isn't pizza sauce, it's ketchup and mustard. We double the beef that's put on any regular pizza, and we put the pickles on top of the cheddar cheese, and bacon on top of those. Onions are optional, and you have to ask for them, so if you don't like onions, your pizza isn't ruined...When you bite into our Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza, it tastes just like a Bacon Cheeseburger.
There's a Burger Battle in January at a couple of the locations that we have a Boss' Pizza and Chicken, and that Promotion brings a ton of business to the places that will make a burger. In the spirit of that, we'll make a different offer-for all of our stores, for all of January, Bacon Cheeseburger pizzas will be half price. Medium, large or extra large, delivery, dine in or carryout, we're gonna make it easy for you to choose your burger at the place where you can buy a large or extra large pizza for 12 or 14 bucks and feed your whole family, vs. going out and spending 50-100 bucks to feed the same amount of people.
We aren't saying, don't go support the Burger Battle...we're just offering a less expensive, less busy way to enjoy the great taste of a fantastic cheeseburger this January. Try our submission for the Burger Battle at some point at a much lower price point."
Distinguishing wings
A real little-known thing about working at a pizza and chicken restaurant is that we never know how to label wings with the correct adjective.
There's two types of wings in the pizza industry, you know, the kind of wings that get sauced with a variety of fantastic sauces.
But how do you describe the other type of wings to a customer? Buffalo wings? They aren't all made with hot sauce, and that's sort of the meaning to a lot of people of buffalo wings, made with "buffalo" sauce.
Bone-in wings? I've always thought that sounded a little dirty.
Whatever kind of wings you like, we got 17 flavors, and they're all good. And you could probably say we have hundreds of flavors, because we'll mix sauces together if you want.
Just make sure to let us know if you want boneless, or not boneless...
Why you should order from the local guy
I remember years ago, when my son was about 9, he asked me "Dad, why is your slogan for Boss' "Order from the Local Guy"? What does that mean?"
I said "It just means that we're a local business and people should buy locally."
"Aren't all businesses local?" he said.
"Yes, but some businesses are owned locally, with owners that live in the area and work on the store, and some businesses are owned by giant corporations where all the money that is made goes to the national business and the thousands of people that own that business."
"Well", he said, "why is it better for people to buy from one that is owned locally?" "Because if you buy locally, then the money you spend will go back into the economy locally..." "What's economy?", he interrupted.
"It's like the circle of money within a city or community. People spend money at the bakery, and then the baker spends money at the car dealer, and then the car dealer spends money at our restaurant, and the money just keeps passing hands for stuff people want. It's good if money stays in our local community, in our local economy, because then we might get the money back. If we give the money to a business that isn't local, it's likely to leave our community forever. Does that help?"
"Why would anyone spend money on something that would make the money leave forever?"
Ironically, Small Business Saturday is one of the worst Saturday sales days of the year for us at Boss' Pizza and Chicken. We have busy days on Wednesday and Thursday of Thanksgiving week, but then the weekend really dies down. I know people work to order from local businesses on Saturday, but I think food places often get forgotten when it comes to that.
We all know that there are sometimes we can't help but spend our money with a national corporation, but on this "Cyber Monday", and every day, we'd ask you to consider ordering online from a local guy, any local guy, and not a third party or a restaurant that's owned by a corporation. It keeps the money in our communities, in the local delivery driver's pockets, keeps people employed in your hometown, and keeps the money funneling back through OUR economy. I promise we'll keep offering bundles to keep prices reasonable here and we'll do everything we can do to give you a reason to Order from the Local Guy! I also PROMISE you that we appreciate your business more than one of the places you might spend it where it will "leave the community forever".

Boss' Pizza and Chicken
The founding father
I started Boss' in 2005 in a 1200 square foot building on South Minnesota avenue in Sioux Falls. Our target market was late night customers because at the time, Sioux Falls didn't have any late night places you could get food except Perkins and Fryin Pan. No 24 hour fast food, no Doordash from anywhere, no delivery places open at all, until we got open and stayed open til 3am. We also would open at 11am so it was long days, but the irony was we would always do more sales from midnight til 3am than the rest of the day combined. I remember a day early on where we did $120 in sales from 11am til midnight, and then $1200 in sales from midnight to close. Made it very difficult to staff, and I ended up getting called in to work late at night (around 1am when people were leaving bars) quite often. Probably more often than not, really. And I welcomed those calls because I wanted to have great service so we could build the business.
Sometimes I got called in out of bed, and sometimes I'd get called straight from having a cocktail at the local pub after a long day of work. Whenever I got called in, I'd always make myself a pizza to take home. Early on, I'd get myself a Mexi Delight (without the tomatoes and onions of course because I'm a picky eater) or a Spicy Ranch Buffalo Chicken. Those were my go-to pizzas. They were on the menu and I loved them. I'd mix in a Rancheroni from time to time, but I'd always take a cup of pizza sauce with me to dip the Rancheroni in. Our sauce and our ranch dressing always went really well together, so then I'd start getting my favorite pizza with our regular sauce on it and bring a cup of ranch to dip the pizza. And I always loved putting crushed red peppers on the meat pizza I would get, because I loved the extra spice.
As much as I hated getting called out of bed, or out of the bar, I loved that we were growing the business, and I always ate well after working a couple more hours.
One day, I figured, because the ranch and pizza sauce go so well, I would just make my favorite pizza and drizzle ranch over the top of the cheese before I put it in the oven. Why not, it goes so well together? Before this experiment, I'd already found the value of putting crushed red peppers on the cheese before putting it in the oven, so I just threw some crushed red peppers on top of the ranch.
Every night I got called in, going forward, that's what I made for myself. Never thought about putting it on the menu, never really told anyone about it.
In 2009 we moved into a much bigger location in Sioux Falls. Started a buffet. I had a long-time friend managing that place at the time. He had been a manager on and off since the early days. He told me I should put that pizza on the buffet, so I did. We had to come up with a name for it, though. I was very clear, I thought it should be called Founder's Favorite, since I'm the founder of Boss'. My kids were very young at the time, and we went to Coldstone Creamery all the time, and they had a "Founder's Favorite". I thought that name was great, it would only make sense to name my creation "Founder's Favorite".
My buddy made a label for that pizza on the buffet. He labeled it "Founding Father". I didn't say anything because I didn't know if anyone else would really like my pizza so it didn't really matter.
That pizza became our most popular pizza on the buffet. People would constantly ask for it. The name became Founding Father, there was no way to change it anymore, and so we put it on the takeout menu. It's been one of our highest sellers ever since.
I asked my buddy years later when he wasn't even working for me anymore, why he called it Founding Father. He said that is what he heard me say to label it that day. I asked "why in the world would we call it the Founding Father?" He said "I just thought it would be the pizza that the Founding Fathers would have eaten. I thought that was why you called it that!"
My friend passed away a little over a year ago, but the Founding Father name on that pizza will live on forever and I'll never forget that. After all these years, there isn't a pizza that gets people anywhere near as excited as the Founding Father. I've had no less than 20 people tell me that it is easily the best pizza they have ever eaten.
If you like a little spicy, and you love ranch, and you like meat pizza, you'll LOVE the Founding Father. We can get one to you in about 45-60 minutes if you're reading this between the hours of 11am and 3am...

Introducing our most popular limited edition pizza
Our Regional Manager of Operations, Jordan Binstock, came up with an idea a few years ago to have a Limited Time Only pizza available all the time and to change that pizza every quarter.
We have 36 Specialty Pizzas, which I have never seen on any other pizza place's menu, anywhere. I'm not saying we have the biggest selection of specialty pizzas anywhere...but I haven't seen any that are even close.
So I decided a long time ago that we have to stop at 36. There was no real reason for 36 to be the Maximum, other than that's how many we have. The fact of the matter is, our specialty pizza menu with all its choices overwhelms people more than it impresses them, so, no more.
But that doesn't stop great ideas and great pizzas from being invented and discovered by staff, so the solution when we find one of these, is to have a Limited Time Only Pizza every quarter.
I actually don't love the idea, because marketing a pizza to our customers that they won't be able to order if they want it in a few months seems counter-productive to me. But Jordan is a smart guy, so I went with the idea.
Then topped off with honey (the Bee) drizzled over the top. If you like sweet and spicy, it is heaven.
There has never been a pizza that has been asked about after the quarter was over than the Bee Sting, and it's not even close. It's available January 1 til March 31, so you have time, but the sooner you have it the more time you'll have to get it again.
The most popular “specialty pizza” ever
Probably the number one question that I get asked about my business over the years is "What's your best selling pizza?" It kind of makes sense, I ask other people that own businesses what they sell the most of, or what products make up the highest amount of their sales. It's kind of a business question that sparks other conversation.
It especially works well in the pizza industry because everyone knows about pizza. Literally, everyone. People a lot of times follow it up with "what about Pepperoni and green olives" or something like that, whatever their personal favorite is . It's human nature.
Because of our mass amount of specialty pizzas, a lot of the time it means "what is your highest selling specialty pizza?" When this comes from people who have ordered from us a lot, of course they are looking for their favorite pizza to be near the top.
The reality is this...even though our claim to fame is our extremely unique specialty pizza menu, our top selling pizzas on that menu are extremely predictable and something you can get as a specialty at most any pizza place. In this order, they are 1. The Meatza 2. The Super Pepperoni and 3. The Boss. All meat, heavy pepperoni and the Supreme. Probably the top three at every pizza place in the world (although I think our Meatza being the top is unique because our all-meat pizza is so good).
But what about the unique ones, the ones you can't get anywhere else?
The top of that list is the Rancheroni, and it's not a surprise.
Ranch dressing as the base, Italian sausage, Pepperoni, Mozzarella cheese, more pepperoni, more cheese-it's a ranch lovers dream partnered up with the most popular two topping pizza with extra toppings. It's aptly named so you don't forget what's on it...Rancheroni.
Have you ever had nacho pizza?
Nachos are the best. A delicious plate of nachos is always one of the best things to have in front of me.
One thing about them, I've always thought, is that they are kind of a pain and certainly can cause controversy when being shared. Someone getting a lot more cheese or meat on their chip could cause an argument. Someone could get a finger in the mountain of meat and cheese and ruin it for everyone else. They're kind of messy because some chips are so covered with cheese, there's no real "handle" to grab it. You have to use chips as a skid loader to get the stuff you really want.
Bottom line, Nachos are fantastic but they aren't without their challenges. Meet the Chicken Queso Crunch Pizza.
It really could be called "Chicken and Beef Nachos without all the hassle", but the creator, Nate Anderson, named it the Chicken Queso Crunch. The pizza crust provides the perfect platform and "handle" for the nachos. The sauce is the best part, a mix of nacho cheese and salsa that
Then we put the beef and fajita chicken on abundantly, followed by the seasoned nacho chips, and cheddar cheese on top of those to keep them from burning, but to cook them in to give the pizza it's CRUNCH. Jalapenos on top are free if you want to add them, then we throw it in the oven.
How much sausage can you handle?
If you could pick a name for a specialty pizza at a place called "Boss' Pizza" that has ALL of the kinds of sausage, what would you call it?
Say hello to the BOSSAGE pizza.
When we started Boss' Pizza and Chicken, we only had Italian sausage, despite my personal favorite sausage being pork sausage. By the way, if you've never had pork sausage on a pizza, you need to try it. Italian sausage is the typical sausage you will get on a pizza when you just order sausage, but in my opinion, pork sausage is far superior.
We added pork sausage a few years in, and then a food representative came to me a few years ago with a fantastic spicy sausage that I had to add to the menu. Now we had 3 different kinds of sausage...I don't think any other pizza place I've been has three different types of sausage...so we had to see what a specialty pizza would look like and taste like with ALL the sausage flavors.
The answer...I think the view might be the best of any pizza we have, and the flavor isn't far behind if you love sausage. If you insist on vegetables, just say Bossage with jalapenos, or whatever you want on it.
No need to add more meat.
If you're a meat lover and you like a little spice, you have to try the Bossage. Italian, Pork and Spicy Sausage, with pizza sauce and extra cheese. It just might end up being your favorite pizza.
